Operation Thanh.

My worst kept secret yet – for a while now, I decided to finally quit my current job and go for a nice long overdue vacation before my next job starting in April.

Which shore this time?

To where this time? Vietnam! Yes I know I've been there but it was always for work and I never had the chance to really see the place. Spent 99% of the time between the hotel and client's site from dawn to dusk. I might as well have slept at the client's office.

Plus I really like the place and its one of those places I would definitely like to explore and experience properly and not some 2 week wirlwind. How long time this? 1 MONTH! – Some have called me insane for going this long, “how am I going to afford it?!” they asked, to which I answer, “Per Diem!”. Saved for over 2 years working and now I am going to use it!! Its now my time to enjoy myself and I intend to do it to the fullest extent.

What about my job and etc?

I tried to strike a deal with my previous company to take a month off, but it was not happening as they really needed the resources (Just trying to get the 2 weeks was harder since there was only 4 of us left). Still even though they needed the resources badly, work conditions didn't improved until one day I realized it wasn't worth working there anymore and decided to move on. But don't worry, I already have a job waiting for me when I come back. I'm not going to fall for that trap anymore.

Better pay, better benefits and most of all, new opportunity to enter into another industry. I've worked CPU fab, digtial instruments development, Geological mining simulation and recently payment systems. I've seen, learned and worked with some of the greatest developers to the scummiest developers and managers of the IT world and yet, there's still so much to learn and try out.

What gear are you bringing?

This time its all film! That's right – All film. No digital gear whatsoever.

  1. Nikon F6.
  2. Nikon Fm3a.
  3. Nikkor 17-35mm.
  4. Tamron SP90.
  5. CZ 35mm.
  6. Nikkor 24-85mm VR.
  7. 70 rolls of Kodak Portra 400.
  8. 40 rolls of Ilford HP5+.
  9. 11 rolls of Kodak Ektar 100.
  10. Fujifilm instax wide 210 (8 packs of film).

Feel its rather risky, but I hope it will be enough.

Where in Vietnam?

I'll be traveling from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi over the course of one month. Visiting 6 locations. Hopefully things will go well. Hotels have all been booked using TripAdvisor and transports has all been planned.

I wish I had more time to plan for this trip, but I almost had to cancel the whole thing about 2 weeks ago due to medical reasons. Luckily though everything worked out and the doctor gave me the all clear for travel.

So I'll see you all in a month's time. I'll be blogging sporadically when I can, whereever I can. Now I just have to hope I don't get my ass handed to me again just as I was the previous times in Vietnam.

PS: Yes I know that today is the last day of Chinese New Year and Valentine's day. So Happy Chap Go Meh and Valentine's day (I'm actually secretly going with my girlfriend on this trip!!……I WISH!) !
