Photography, life and everything in between

Dubai international airport.

Currently in Dubai awaiting my transit flight from Dubai to Larnaca in Cyprus. For those are are familiar, this would be my second time making the journey and I’m still amazed by the sheer size of the Dubai airport!

Though I see that one problem still persist since I was here back in March, it’s still very hard to find a trolley! I was lucky the last time and found one except this time. So I had to haul my bag all the way to the gate and here I mean typing this story using my iPad connected to the airport’s free wifi while I’m connected back to my VPN. ;) yeah I’m pretty happy about how well it’s been working so far since this is the first time I’m actually fully using the VPN.

P.s: all shots were taken using my iPad.

The death of the language maker..

Dennis M. Ritchie (September 9, 1941 – October 12, 2011)

Another great engineer of the computing world has once again passed away. This time it’s Dennis M. Ritchie whose work have enabled the possible creation of today’s modern software and in fact can be considered the Homo Saipiens aka modern man of computer languages but let’s not forget this other work namely Unix. The grandfather of all Linux operating system flavor that which we all depend on today to run all the massive servers that keep modern society going.

Sadly I only found out about his death just this morning but he had already passed away on the 12th. I guess his death didn’t warrant the same media attention as Steve jobs. But any programmer worth his weight in salt would definitely know who Dennis M. Ritchie is and how his work had paved the way for the modern software world.

I fondly remember how I studied c programming back when I was in secondary school and how i desperately searched for any book on programming languages, I only found bits and pieces because Labuan was a rathole where books on anything technological was as rare as pure gold. So I only managed to find it after reaching university and even though I was very familiar with c programming at that point but I still found it a wonderful book to read as it shows how elegant the c language was and how it truly put the power of the computer at the hands of the software developer without using mnemonic as it were with assembly language. Now this was a great man whose work had greatly enriched my life…..

You will greatly be missed though your passing has been a quiet event but know this, many of your life works are the foundation of today’s modern software.

Well well well, it seems Google is being a cheapskate

“The first question I asked,” Mr. Taxali said in a recent interview, “is ‘What’s the fee?’”

Mr. Taxali said that when he was told Google would pay nothing, he declined.

More here

This reminds me of another incident as told by Harlan Ellison. It seem a lot of companies are trying to get free material with the promise of publicity. Bullshit I say!

Best advice I can give.

To people who want to take up photography as a hobby.

“Retouching” means photoshopping. Til then, pleasant dreams

Vinno Model shoot

This is from the model shoot from last Sunday morning. Thanks to NikonK , G3k and Iris for the invite to the shoot. The model that day was Vinno who is a stunning model to work with!

For today’s posting I decided to try something new all together instead of posting each of the photos one by one, here I have embed all the photos as a gallery/slideshow via flash which connects directly into the smugmug album.

So you can just browse through the photos and if you want to look at them in higher details, just click on the gallery/slideshow and it will allow you to go straight to the website (but you need to disable the add blocker first to do so). Also note the left and right arrows allows you to go forward or backwards in the gallery and pressing the pause symbol in the middle of the slideshow pauses it.

Also for this time I decided to play with colors, there is nothing wrong with the original colors but I just wanted to try something different. So drop me a line and tell me what you think. Until then, pleasant dreams~!

Another reason to get a less stressful job and a Mac

I used to get such same urges when I was working with PCs and providing tech support to virtually the whole of Labuan (Its a pretty small island).

But joke aside, this is actually a real problem known as Office rage in which the crappy life of working for 8 hours in front of a computer causes people to lose their tempers. Humans are creatures meant to be out and doing some work, not a bunch of cave dwellers originally. But I guess with life we have to adapt, although some do not adapt as well as others.

Pleasant dreams, I know I have.

This is what I feel sometimes when I am asked to ….

take photos of people who are delusional about their own self-image. WARNING: blood curdling scream involved

Rising fuel prices? The ultimate solution to it?

Don’t drive a car.

“….we don’t just see sheet metal, we see walking money profits.”

You may have noticed there hasn’t been a lot of photos or reviews lately. Things have been a bit hectics, but I think come Saturday I should have some new material to post up instead of these lame youtube clips. So until then pleasant dreams~~

This is why I don’t have a printer at home

Cause I leave it to them to get the job done

I kid, these guys are insanely hardcore.

I’ve always wondered why people are willing to spend at least RM320~800 for a printer. When a better service exist at camera shops which uses multi-million bucks worth of equipment and you pay a fraction of the cost of those home printers to have your photos printed by these said machines.

So do you think your dingy little printer can do better? Unless of course it one of those that go for about RM3200~5000 and then it may not be able to match the quality of those machines used by your local camera shops. Why? Because getting a good print is a multi factor process, not only the ink has to be good, the paper needs to be the correct for it so not just any “photocopier” paper can be used to print good photos.

Its also cost effective when you do the math, the ink refill packs are not cheap when you calculate the number of prints you can make per ink pack to the cost it of having it printed at the shop. Personally, I avoid them unless you are:

  1. On a deadline and it needs to be sent to the client to clinch that multi million dollar contract
  2. Buy a unit that cost more then RM3200 and then it may not be as good as you hope for.

I’ll explain the second point, just because you buy a really expensive printer doesn’t mean that the colors will be perfect, you need to calibrate the colors to be accurate but getting it done will require additional equipment which in turns requires more funds. While those at camera shops have their printer calibrated by trained personal or they have auto-calibrated features already.

This article is for Malaysians who bleeding always ask me, “what printer do I use at home to print my photos?” I always answer,”I don’t have a printer” and they all do a collective gasp like some Brady bunch rejects like I just said I was an alien from outer space. They would then proceed to ignore me and continue talking about how they new printer prints life-like photos at only rm2.5 per photo.

In any event, if you have any objections to what my article has stated. Drop me a line and tell me what you think. So until then pleasant dreams~!

FINALLY! Found it!

While I have some pretty good programming skills but I’ll be honest here when I say that my html skills incredibly sucks! I finally managed to to increase the width of the html after looking through the html template codes

/* Outer-Wrapper
———————————————– */
#outer-wrapper {
width: 1000px;
margin:0 auto;
padding:10px;
text-align:$startSide;
font: $bodyfont;
}

#main-wrapper {
width: 700px;
float: $startSide;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
}

Just simply change the value for the “width” for both the outer-wrapper and main-wrapper (note the outer-wrapper’s width MUST be more then the main-wrapper’s width or else the side bar will not show up).

With the width made bigger, I will now be able to post bigger pics. Although I won’t go and change all my old previous entries to reflect this change (unless I have the time) but new entries from now on will use bigger pics. (Note, I’ve changed my previous entry to this new size so drop me a line and tell me what you guys think of it.) So until then, pleasant dreams~

Problem uploading photos to flickr

For the path 4 days I have been having problems uploading my photos to flickr even though I am using a paid account. I will try again to upload the remaining photos but if once again it fails, I will have to contact flickr on the problem.

I don’t think it’s because they’ve put a cap limit on me as I am using a paid account which gives me unlimited uploads.
