Maid cafe in Penang
First it was Sakura trees, now I find a maid cafe. I had heard word around Penang that a maid cafe had indeed open but I was unable to confirm this or not.
Well today after lunch I was contacted by CC who gave me the weblink giving the location of this cafe and their information (it was their website). He had gone there for lunch with his colleague thus was the reason why he had canceled “Usual Friday”.
Sakura in Penang
Would you believe? I figure you wouldn’t and you’re right, it’s not really a Sakura tree but it sure looks like it.
This was spotted on my way back from the Epson seminar that day. When I saw it I knew I wanted to take it, I asked my passengers if they wanted to stop there so we photograph it but they all had matters they needed to finish up. So I dropped them all off at home and went back home first to rest a bit anyway as the light then was still too harsh (afternoon).
At about 5:30pm I went out and picked up pointNshoot since he also wanted to shoot the sakura.
We parked right across the road from it and started to shoot outside as the compound where the tree was located is actually private property
Epson advance photography and printing seminar
We found out about this event from a posting in Rojak Studio by TY informing that a seminar by Epson showcasing their printer, scanner, PMP as well as color management software was going to be held at the Holiday inn at Batu Ferringi.
The event was to start at 7:45am, so ChewingGum, Cham, mybest and I headed out at about 6:40am and headed to McD at Sunrise gurney for breakfast while we waited for the rest of the gang to arrived.
So after a good breakfast we headed off at about 7:20am and reached there roughly on time. The event started off with registration and a brief introduction of what the plan would, at about 8 or so was the model shooting where we would have to pick the best pic from our shots to be printed by Epson’s line of printers. There would also be a lucky draw where the prizes would be Epson’s latest line of consumer base printers.
Once in a while……
A tree in Penang will bloom full of flowers, this particular tree was located on a stretch of road leading to sunway Tunas. Here are some shots of the flowers, I had wanted to use a longer lens but my sigma 70-200mm had been loaned to another friend.
So I had to make do with the 85mm I had.

Top model of the world 2008 at Penang
This model shooting was held last Sunday at Gurney Hotel, Penang by the Velvet studio productions.
Our liaison with Velvet studio was Andytan and NikonK who managed to gathered a small group of people from both fotokrazy and rojakstudio here in Penang.
The event started at 9am and finished at 11am. We all went to the Subway place at Gurney hotel to have our breakfast and as a gathering point, it was also located next to starbucks so I managed to get my fix for the morning as well as the coffee at Subway was subpar.
There were 7 models and all supplied by velvet production, the entry fee for this contest was RM30 per photographer.
At 9am we made our way to the swimming pool at the hotel where we then registered and briefed on the rules and regulation governing the event (honestly, I don’t think anyone was paying ANY attention). So without further adieu we were set “loose” to take our photographs of the models.
Kuala Lumpur
On Tuesday I had the pleasure of going down to KL for an interview as the company was paying for both my hotel stay as well as my plane tickets. They had booked me into Pearl International Hotel at Bukit Jalil.
After the interview I returned to the hotel to rest, I only slept at 1am and woke up at 5am last night as I attended a friend’s funeral the night before.
So after a few hours rest I got up and saw the view was beautiful and decided to pull out my camera and take some shots of it.
It was a bit hazy so not all the shots are daylight clear as a result

So until then pleasant dreams~
Les Chang Eng Keong 13th July 1968 ~ 18th Feb 2008
Today at 10:55am, Les Chang Eng Keong of Penang Malaysia passed away at GH hospital at Block A, 2nd floor surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He was a great mentor to me for whenever I had a question I would go ask him and he would answer with great intelligence and he would answer with great wisdom for when I had a question about the human thoughts.
He was the first person I went to when I wanted to learn more about photography and he would be the first person I went to when I needed comments on my photographs. He would always offer the greatest suggestions and advices on how to better my works.
But one thing he taught me without words but through the examples of his life was that anyone can survive hardship if the face it with courage. Today so great was his courage that even Heaven decided to call him home to be by God’s side and to the great halls of his ancestors.

He was one of the founding members of fotokrazy Penang and was mentor to all the new members that joined fotokrazy and was always ready to answer any question that anyone may have to the best of his abilities.
Figurines
Now this is a new field for me, I never tried this type of photography before as I never had any figurines to try out on. I had seen a lot of this models when I was in Japan and had considered getting a few but I was trying to conserve money at the time so I never got them, it will be a mistake I will have to regret now.
I was at the one-stop small near gurney yesterday when I came across this model shop and decided to take a look, I found a figure that look simply beautiful and it was well made, so I decided to buy it along with another smaller one.
Here are some shots of the figurines I bought, I don’t recognize the pink hair girl but the brunette is from fate/stay night
The keepers
How many photos do you take when you’re out taking pictures? 10? 20 or just completely lose track? Alright I can understand if you can’t remember as you’re most likely taking pictures using digital cameras.
So here is a better question, out of all the photos you take per session, how many of those are keepers? Meaning photos that look good enough or with a bit of digital massage can be made into good photos?
For me it’s average at about 10~20% depending whether I took the photos on the fly or just decided to bring along my camera with me as I went out and not something that was planned. For planned events, it’s always higher as I mentally have ideas to what I want while for those unplanned ones it’s usually VERY low.
But sometimes those unplanned times can yield are some amazing results

Like this pic here, I was having dinner at the nearby sunshine food court and the light was simply perfect!

Or this shot I managed to spot while looking for storks to take at an open field.

Or a picture of this stock I took during the time I was in Labuan.
I’m back~~
So after a grueling week of traveling around in East Malaysia I have finally return to my home in Penang and also to a dead car battery which I need to have change today. Ah ever so humble, there is no place that has much hassle as home…….
The return home to Labuan.
The long journey begins tomorrow. I pray that I don’t sit next to a crying baby, else I will start murdering people along the way. So until then, pleasant dreams~!
